Forest Fire Forest Fire

My family tree’s
losing all its leaves
crashing towards
wide open sky
and out of sight.

It’s dark here;
and in finite forests,
infinitely tall,
I can’t see
the leaves for trees.

Fragile skeletons
litter the soil
in tattered drifts
where children bend
and dig for clues.

The jolly policeman
went fishing in the rain.
He slipped down the bank
and the doctor caught
  a tumour
It had worked its tentacles
through and through
his thick strong femur,

hook, line and
                      sinker

A year later his wife
reeled in a misaddressed letter
and found
 out, they were nibbling
gnawing
    on his lungs.

Four little tiddlers.

The doctor gave him pills

Some days the drugs made him swell up and shake
Some days the drugs made him scratch and scratch

The jolly policeman’s
 deep booming voice
                                                                     
Familiar Familiar

I’ve walked lazily with you
down a French lane,
where the continental bakery smell
hangs heavy over the flowers.

Visions are seldom
what they seem,
and my parents raise one hand
across the wide meadow.

The gleam in your eyes
is so familiar,
it leads me by the hand
away from all I remember.
Sickness Sickness

It’s not what you think,
that I’m thinking of.

The hot-wet jealousy
came off in the shower

this morning with
a scrub and scratch

fingernails raking up
and down my skin

and black flecks falling
like flies

spiralling down
and I’m thinking of

you, and white rumpled sheets.
Sunlight streaming

through a dusty room
with distant traffic

booming through everything
and under everything.
Conservatives Conservative

What does a conservative conserve?
Do they conserve the environment?
Do they conserve resources?
Do they conserve rare birds?
Do they conserve water?
Do they conserve peace?
Do they conserve whales?
Do they conserve human rights?
Do they conserve choice?
Do they conserve tradition?
Do they conserve family values?
Do they conserve quintessential Englishness?
Do they conserve the M5?
Do they conserve their cars?
Do they conserve supermarkets?
Do they conserve the working class?

Conservatives is much too vague a word,
they should be renamed the Self-preservatives.
The Exchange The Exchange

I give each day
parts of myself
away, and swap
them for better
bits of everyone else.

It’s not a jigsaw,
pieces fit whichever
way they want.
It’s more like jenga;
carefully balanced towers.

I’ll take your fake money,
with no currency
or exchange rate
and swap it
for a picture-perfect beginning.

A birthday cake made for a Catholic friend of Ginger hair colour made by our company Quality Equality Cakes.

Under the Pope's skirts is sticky ginger cake, her robes are adorned with silver balls, crystalized petals, and her body is Ariel the little mermaids.

This cake took me a whole day to create. And then we ate it. And it was good, yay.

Isn't "and yeah, veritably it was good" more appropriate? At least, that sounds more biblical...Then again, she's a FEMALE church leader *gasp*, which isn't very biblical at all. (But neither is the usual male Pope...I digress). Anyway, good job! Now I'm reminiscing over my fifth (?) birthday, when my mother made me a mermaid cake using a similar Ariel doll.
